David Searns:
All right, Vicki, we’re down to our last minute, so I need to introduce our next speaker before we wrap up this segment. Please take good notes—this one’s going to move fast.
A quick teaser for our next guest: his favorite team is the Philadelphia Eagles, and fun fact—he once raced Michael Phelps in the 200 breaststroke. (He didn’t say how it turned out, but just being in the pool at the same time is impressive!)
His superpower? Picking the perfect avocado every time. Please welcome our first guest presenter of the day, Joey Frampus, Managing Director of Sales at Butler Street, here to teach us about the ARE Advantage and how to unlock client growth in the age of AI.
Joey Frampus:
Thanks for the intro, David! And yes, Phelps did win the race—I came in second. I was sixteen, he was in town for a home meet, and I got to swim against him. Still one of my favorite stories.
I had to switch my fun fact to avocados since my original one about parallel parking was already taken! And yes, big win for the Eagles—very stressful, but worth it.
I’ve got about twenty minutes, so let’s dive right in.
I’m Joey Frampus, Managing Director of Sales at Butler Street. For those who don’t know us, we’re a consulting firm specializing in the staffing industry. Everyone on our team has grown up in staffing—we know exactly what you’re dealing with.
And Vicki really teed up this session perfectly this morning.
The Evolution of AI in Staffing
Joey:
Here’s what we’ll cover today:
- How we’re using AI right now.
- How it’s evolving and changing since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
- How to use AI not just to run your business—but to retain and grow your customers.
At Butler Street, we’ve seen the same headlines everyone else has: job openings down, projections off, and market volatility continuing.
Let’s start with a quote from Reid Hoffman, author of Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI. He said:
“Our sense of urgency must match the speed of change.”
AI is improving at a rate of 100% every seven months—which is staggering. Since 2023, we’ve seen GPT-5, Grok, Anthropic’s Claude models, and dozens more. It’s nearly impossible to keep up.
That’s why we’ve made it our mission at Butler Street to bring this knowledge to our clients, so you can focus on staffing while we help you leverage AI effectively.

The Debate: Job Loss or Job Creation?
You’ve probably seen quotes from industry leaders that range from promising to alarming.
- Andy Jassy (Amazon) predicts we’ll need fewer people for repetitive tasks.
- Sam Altman (OpenAI) recently told Tucker Carlson that customer service will be the first area hit hardest by AI.
- But on the other hand, IBM says they’ve hired more people because AI has boosted productivity, freeing up resources for new investments.
- Jensen Huang (NVIDIA) said it best:
“AI won’t take your job. But the person who uses AI might.”
So, the real question isn’t whether AI will disrupt staffing—it’s how you’ll adapt to stay indispensable.

AI Literacy: The New Essential Skill
A McKinsey survey found that non-IT roles requiring GenAI skills have increased ninefold since 2022.
Just as “Microsoft Office proficiency” was once a must-have on every résumé, AI literacy is now the new baseline skill.
So, what does AI literacy actually mean?
According to the World Economic Forum, it involves four levels:
- Interacting with AI – asking questions, using tools like ChatGPT.
- Creating with AI – producing content or solving problems.
- Managing AI – coordinating workflows that include AI systems.
- Designing with AI – building custom solutions and integrations.
Most of us fall somewhere between “creating” and “managing.” And that’s perfectly fine—the goal is progress, not perfection.

From Tool to Teammate
When we ask staffing firms how they’re using AI, we get common answers:
- Writing job descriptions
- Boolean searches
- Crafting marketing content
- Building email templates
- Drafting LinkedIn posts
That’s great—but that’s still treating AI as a tool, not a teammate.
Think about it this way: you wouldn’t tell your coworker, “Write me an email.” You’d say, “Can you review this email and tell me if the tone feels right?”
Do the same with AI. Have it review your work, not replace your work.
Ask: Does this email hit the right tone? How can I make it clearer or more engaging?
That’s collaboration. That’s AI as a teammate—and it’s the future of how we’ll work.

Using AI to Expand and Retain Clients
Let’s shift to how AI supports client growth.
Remember: 100% of your revenue comes from your current clients.
Retention is expansion. If you lose a client, it’s like taking two steps back—you now have to win new business just to get back to even.
According to Bullhorn data, retaining and selling to current clients is six to seven times easier than acquiring new ones.
So where should you focus first?
- Prevent defection.
- Deepen relationships.
- Proactively bring clients new ideas and insights.
That’s how you stay top-of-mind and indispensable.

Client Retention Strategy
Ask yourself:
- Do we have a formalized client retention plan?
- Are our account managers following it?
- Does it still work in this market?
If your retention strategy hasn’t changed in the last five years, it’s probably outdated.
Your clients’ hiring models are shifting—and if you’re not adapting alongside them, you’re falling behind.
Don’t wait until a client leaves to react. Build structured conversations—monthly check-ins, QBRs, or “needs recognition” reviews—to uncover new opportunities before someone else does.

The ARE Advantage: Apply, Retain, Expand
At Butler Street, we teach a framework called the ARE Advantage—Acquire, Retain, Expand.
Today we’re focusing on the “R” and the “E”: retention and expansion.
Retention happens when you help clients recognize new needs.
Expansion happens when you uncover hidden opportunities within your existing accounts.
That’s where AI comes in—by helping you spot patterns, surface insights, and act faster.

AI in Action: Building Creative Retention Strategies
At Butler Street, we built our own AI sales coach. We’re not developers—but we took the time to understand how AI works and applied it to our sales process.
Here’s an example: I asked ChatGPT to act as my account management strategist. My prompt was:
“Ask me clarifying questions before giving me recommendations on how to retain and grow clients.”
That interaction generated five creative retention ideas—things like running retention audits, client referral challenges, and new QBR formats.
Would you rather have your salespeople come up with ideas from scratch, or use AI to brainstorm and refine smarter ones faster?
That’s the power of AI literacy.

Client Expansion: The Hidden Opportunity
When we ask staffing firms about their top customers, we often hear:
“I don’t know our market share there.”
If you don’t know where your client’s contingent labor spend is going, you can’t expand effectively.
Ask:
- Which departments control the spend?
- Is it HR, procurement, or a managed service provider?
- How much is allocated to SOW, VMS, or direct sourcing?
Knowing where and how they spend allows you to position yourself strategically.
And don’t forget the most painful six words a sales rep can hear:
“I didn’t know you offered that.”
Your existing clients should always know the full scope of your services.

Turning Data into Action
We have access to more data than ever—but data without insight is meaningless.
You can take your KPIs and feed them into ChatGPT or another AI tool, and it will generate an immediate performance summary—complete with analysis and recommendations.
Would you rather have your account managers do this kind of exercise weekly or just glance at dashboards?
AI transforms passive reporting into actionable insight—and that’s what drives smarter expansion and retention.

Q&A
Audience Question:
“I’m starting a staffing company for the third time, but I’m worried AI will replace staffing firms altogether. Everything we do could be automated—how do we stay relevant?”
Joey Frampus:
It’s a fair concern. AI is transformative—but remember, it’s not the first disruption.
Even companies with massive HR teams—AT&T, for example—still rely heavily on staffing partners. Why? Because staffing firms specialize in what those companies don’t want to do themselves.
Our value is expertise, relationships, and human connection. Use AI to enhance that, not replace it. Bundle services. Consult. Advise. The firms that evolve will survive—and thrive.
David Searns:
Exactly. Hiring is hard, even with great tools. We enjoy what our clients don’t—so we’ll continue to have value. AI can make us better at what we do, not obsolete.

Audience Question:
“How can we find out a client’s total labor spend if they’re hesitant to share it?”
Joey:
It’s all about positioning. Don’t just ask for the number—explain why you need it.
Say:
“We want to understand where and how you’re spending so we can allocate resources appropriately and serve you better.”
Start with your best relationship, then move up to procurement. Someone always knows. The key is asking from a place of partnership, not interrogation.

“How often should sales reps be role-practicing?”
Joey:
Ideally every week. Daily might be overkill, but practice is critical.
Think about it: if you’re only getting two answered calls per hundred dials, you’d better make those count. AI is a great tool for self-practice—roleplay in private, get feedback instantly, and refine before you’re in front of a client.
